Hellen's Success Story

“Covid-19 has really affected me. Before, I was working with an NGO but due to this pandemic we were sent home on unpaid leave. This greatly affected me financially making it hard to pay for my basic needs.

However, I have been trying to get other sources of income to continually support my family as well as paying my bills. I tried a small business of vending airtime but unfortunately, I was robbed Kshs. 8,000 and a phone. I decided to venture in selling second hand clothes which I got from Gikomba market (in Nairobi). But this earned me too little since majority of people are currently prioritizing buying food. I also tried to get a Kibanda (small grocery) to trade the basic foodstuffs but it equally did not work out.

Luckily, I had been doing online writing to supplement my income over the last two years and that is what I am currently relying on, solely.  Unfortunately, I have not been having a personal computer making it hard for me to do the assigned jobs.

However, I recently received Kshs 20,000 from LLT through LLSPA upon hearing my struggles. This money together with some small savings that I had enabled me to buy a laptop. I am now writing articles and essays online with ease and completing my assignments on time.

I am grateful for the help I got through the Covid-19 Support Fund, kindly receive my big thank you!!!”

Jane's Success Story

“I only had two weeks to my final exam, when unpleasant news of schools closing came to my notice. All of a sudden, all my plans had been crushed. At school, a day notice was issued to vacate the premises, and unfortunately, I was on shift. I had only a few hours to remove my stuff and take them somewhere. Like everyone else, I headed home, with a lot of questions and uncertainties of what tomorrow held for me.

This course in nursing meant so much for me, that I would finally be able to get a job and support my son and I. But covid -19 was already here with us. At home, the few coins which were in my pocket had to go into good use. I decided to start hawking ready-made food to construction sites before they came to a stop due to the ailing economy which worsened by the day. Food would go bad, therefore leaving me with no other option than look for a plan B to support my household of 9 individuals.

I dropped my CV everywhere I knew, and talked to everyone I knew without success. I have had to do laundry for other people, baby sit, sold my household stuff, just to put food on the table, but this wasn’t sustainable since today you get something, tomorrow you don’t. We live by hope, that tomorrow shall surely come, some friends help, others are going through an equally challenging period, no one to blame.

I am grateful to Langalanga trust and LLSPA for their help because they have helped me when I needed them most. They have supported me with money to buy food for my family for more than 5 months until I rejoined school and finished my course. I have slept hungry, cried myself to sleep, I wouldn’t want anyone to experience this especially little ones who don’t understand the situation. I am hopeful that someone out there with an extra packet of flour, is willing to share, with that person who wasn’t lucky enough to get something to eat.

I am now a Nurse graduate from Cicely Macdonald School of Nursing where I was awarded the best overall critical care nurse 2020. I am also employed at Nairobi hospital (one of the best hospitals in East Africa).

Thank you, Langalanga Trust and Langalanga Scholarship Professionals Association, for supporting me achieve my dreams.”

John's success Story

“I am a qualified community nurse from Tumutumu school of nursing. I have been unemployed for 2 years since I graduated but during Covid 19 Period I got a job in Nanyuki Cottage Hospital.

I had no finances to help me settle in my new work station. I approached LLSPA through their able Chair Kabui Josphat who informed me of the Corona virus support fund. The Fund supported me with settlement money. This was a great support that I will never forget, the fund come through when I needed assistance.

I am now stable in my working place currently working in Covid 19 isolation room taking care of Corona virus victims. Am now a LLSPA member and ready to help any other scholar who needs help and also help the association achieve its goals. Am grateful for the support.”
